The Ada County Free Library District was officially established in August 1984 to provide library services for residents in Ada County by contracting for services at the five established city libraries in the valley. It later became known as the Ada Community Library. The Star branch was opened on November 23, 1988, at the Star Senior Center located at 102 S. Main Street. The Librarians during this time were: Julie (Wilbur) Smith from 1988 to 1990; Aimee (Feiling) Cizmich from 1990 to 1992 and Ellen Druckenbrod from 1992 to 1995 when Cheryl (Kinder) Parris took over as Librarian from 1995 until November of 2001.
From December 10, 1996, to September 30, 2001, the Star Branch Library moved to the Hall Building located at 11152 State Street to accommodate the expanding needs of the community. The library was moved to its present location at 10706 W. State Street (Mira Plaza) on October 1, 2001, and was able to add a children's wing to the facility in October 2002. At its present location, the Library has seen five managers, Laura McNew, Cheri Rendler, Joy Lear, and Monika Pomper; its current manager is Mary Allington.
The library offers many services and programs to the community of Star. They are part of a consortium of eight valley library systems, which allow them access to books they may not have on their shelves. Interlibrary loan is also available for items not found within the consortium.
Computers are available throughout the library with internet access, and the library also offers laptops that can be checked out for in-library use. WiFi access is available 24/7 from the parking lot.
With a library card, patrons can access free databases like Kanopy, the Great Courses, Freegal, genealogy studies and more. Audiobooks, e-books, and magazines can also be downloaded online. The library also offers DVDs and video games for checkout. Library staff host weekly programs for preschoolers, school-age children, teens, and adults. Library programs touch on a wide variety of topics and interests, including early learning education, story times, art, music, STEM, and book clubs.
